Year 10 - Computer Networks Starter

Types of Networks

LANs connect devices across a small local area such as one building or site, while WANs connect different LANs over much larger geographical distances.

Activity 1: Match the Networking Terms

Drag each term into the correct definition.

Term Definition
Covers one site in a small geographical area.
Connects LANs over a large geographical area using telecom infrastructure.
Joins different networks together and directs traffic between them.
Lets several wired devices communicate on the same local network.
Allows wireless devices to join the network using Wi-Fi.
Can control security, software updates and backups for a network.

Activity 2: Sort the Statements

Place each statement into the correct category using the slides.

Transfer files quickly and easily.
Share peripherals and internet connections.
Access files from any computer on a network.
Use a server to manage security, updates and backups.
Malware and viruses can spread easily.
A server failure can stop connected computers working properly.
Heavy traffic can make computers run more slowly.
Networking can increase the security risk to data.

Disadvantages of networking

Activity 3: Explain the Scenario

Given the following scenario, identify which part of the system is the LAN and which part is the WAN. Explain why a router, switch and wireless access point are needed.

A school has desktop computers connected together in one classroom and across the school building. Students also use iPads, and both the iPads and the classroom computers can access the internet. The school network is then linked to another school site in a different town.
